Michael Wagner

CFO

Research Triangle
About

Michael Wagner is a seasoned Fractional CFO and Certified Exit Planning Advisor who partners with small and mid-sized business owners to build companies that are not only profitable, but sustainable and transferable. With over 15 years of experience in finance, operations, and entrepreneurship, Michael has worked alongside owners navigating growth, succession, acquisitions, and financial complexity. He prefers working with SMBs because he believes business owners carry more than a P&L—they carry families, legacies, and communities. He understands the pressure of making payroll, managing risk, and planning for an eventual exit, and he brings both strategic clarity and calm leadership when the stakes are high. In one recent engagement, he stepped into a rapidly growing construction company with fragmented systems and limited visibility into cash flow, helping design the financial structure, forecasting discipline, and controls needed to scale confidently toward $50MM in revenue.
Michael’s superpower is turning financial chaos into clear, decision-ready insight. He builds architecturally sound cash flow models, forecasting systems, and financial frameworks that give owners confidence with banks, bonding agents, investors, and boards. But just as important as the numbers is how he works: collaborative, steady, and people-centered. He partners closely with leadership teams, translating financial complexity into practical decisions and equipping them to own the process. When Michael leaves an engagement, the business is stronger—cash flow is predictable, systems are sound, risks are managed, and the owner has greater clarity, confidence, and optionality for the future.

Other Interests

  • What are you passionate about?  Business as a Vehicle for Regeneration. I genuinely believe business owners hold transformative power. My work as a fractional CFO isn’t just about revenue — it’s about:
    • Sustainable, transferable value
    • Ethical exits
    • Financial clarity that enables freedom
    • Building companies that strengthen families and communities
  • What is your favorite way to spend free time?  Outside of work, I recharge through a mix of exercise, deep thinking, and meaningful connection. A hard workout, time in nature, or a long walk to clear my head helps me stay grounded and focused. I love adventures with friends and family — mountain weekends, road trips for live music, and dinners that turn into hours of conversation — and I’m always on the lookout for great espresso in unexpected small towns along the way. At my core, I’m energized by experiences that combine movement, reflection, and connection — the same balance I try to bring to my work with business owners every day.
  • What is at the top of your "bucket list"?  At the top of my bucket list is building something lasting — a life and a business ecosystem that integrates family, community, and meaningful work. My wife and I share a long-term vision of owning land where we can gather people, build community, and live in a way that feels grounded and generative. That vision shapes how I advise business owners today: I believe businesses should create freedom, stability, and opportunity — not just income. Helping owners build sustainable, transferable value so they have real options for the future is deeply aligned with what I’m building in my own life.

Before FocusCFO

Prior to FocusCFO, Michael Wagner served as a fractional CFO and senior financial leader for founder-led construction, trades, and service businesses across North Carolina, while also building and leading his own HR tech startup. Earlier in his career, he lived and worked internationally in the Philippines and the Netherlands, gaining cross-cultural leadership experience and a broader perspective on how businesses grow and operate in different environments. His work has involved designing finance functions from the ground up, leading disciplined 13-week cash flow forecasting, strengthening WIP and job-costing systems, and guiding ownership transitions and acquisitions in $1–30MM businesses scaling toward $50MM and beyond. This experience taught him that growing companies don’t just need accurate numbers—they need clarity, structure, and a steady financial partner who can translate complexity into confident decisions and long-term value.

What attracted you to FocusCFO?

What attracted me to FocusCFO is the belief that small and mid-sized business owners deserve the same level of strategic financial leadership that large corporations take for granted. I’ve spent years working alongside founder-led companies, and I’ve seen how isolating and high-pressure ownership can be. FocusCFO’s operating model—pairing experienced CFOs with business owners in a long-term, relationship-driven way—aligns deeply with how I believe finance should work: not as compliance, not as scorekeeping, but as strategic partnership.
