Christine Hovan

Christine Hovan

CFO

Louisville Metro
About

Christine brings decades of experience to her role as Fractional CFO: Experienced manufacturing financial manager, strategic partner to the CEO, successful with corporate acquisition and divestiture. By asking lots of questions and mapping processes, Christine has improved cash flow, inventory turns, and staff retention. She asks a lot of questions - and has often told people she was born with the "nosy" gene. She finds tremendous value in watching work in a cell, asking the A/P clerk why they do something, asking a manufacturing worker what would make work easier or more accurate. In later years, she pivoted to non-profit work, using her experience to make a difference in hunger and homelessness in her county. Non-profits benefit from improvements that increase cash flow, lower inventory, improve reporting and strategic planning. Revenue for St. Vincent dePaul doubled in her first three years. These are the same skills she used in her manufacturing career. These skills produce results for non-profits as well as small and medium-sized companies. Christine is energized by being where the action is - working with clients at the food pantry, being on the shop floor, talking with the sales people about the product.

Other Interests

  • What was your favorite vacation?  Friends travelled to Hawaii to cruise the Islands. A beautiful place, great company! I so enjoyed this time that I named my company Five Wise People, a nickname for our travel group.
  • What is your favorite movie?  Places in the Heart. Resilience, strength, care for each other. And a love story.
  • Who/what is your favorite musical artist/or song?  Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. The opening notes get me every time.

Before FocusCFO

Prior to Focus CFO, I worked in plant manufacturing settings. There is so much to learn about a company, and I never stopped learning. The best way I found to learn is to ask the people doing the work what they were doing, why they did it, and what improvements could be made. I had a professor who came in one night and asked us all to stand. We stood up. When we sat down, he asked us why we all stood up. "Because you asked us to". It sounds simple, but it is profound. Curiosity (why) and "why did you stand up" (what) provides a lot of information. I found that department heads were very good in their area. When we added more corporate information, taught them how to build their budgets, and understand financial statements, the business improved. My husband had a company that reached $10MM in annual revenue. Constantly balancing the inventory against orders, the sales peoples commission structure, Federal Reserve Bank policy changes and consolidation in the banking equipment industry were daily challenges. After 15 years, he sold the company. I've seen the highs and lows, putting our home on the line. It was wonderful, it was the hardest thing we've done. I would do it again!

What attracted you to FocusCFO?

I am newly retired from full time non-profit work. Before that, I gained decades of experience in Tier 1 manufacturing. Not ready to completely disappear from the work world, I appreciate the opportunity to work with varied clients. I worked with (married, too) a small business owner and large manufacturing companies. With FocusCFO, I will be able to use my experience to help others and still have time to pursue interests that have waited for retirement.
