The Benefit of Experience: How FocusCFO Helped Donwil Gain Unprecedented Levels of Financial Insight

“Partnering with FocusCFO created for me an opportunity to be mentored by people with a wealth of knowledge and experience. I get the benefit of all that experience, and I don’t have to commit to bringing them on as an employee. I think it's an underutilized service offering in small, closely held companies.”

– Chris Massetti, President, Donwil

The Situation

Chris Massetti has led Donwil — a company serving enterprises across Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Eastern Ohio with critical power and cooling systems — since 2000. Despite years of ambitious leadership, he was struggling with financial forecasting in a volatile industry, needed a disciplined model for shareholder distributions, and wanted to explore geographic expansion. He connected with FocusCFO Area President Tom Bartos, who introduced him to fractional CFO John Busshaus.

What We Did

Working alongside Donwil's leadership team, their FocusCFO CFO:

  • Delivered financial statements that the leadership team had never seen before, and trained the team to understand them
  • Built an annual forecast and ongoing monthly financial analysis to support better decision-making
  • Drove the month-end close to within five days of month end, which was a first in the company's history
  • Restructured sales compensation packages, enabling faster and more transparent variable pay
  • Evolved the engagement from tactical financial work into a full strategic advisory relationship

The Result

Donwil now closes its books within five days each month, its sales team has greater clarity on compensation, and leadership makes decisions with far more confidence. What started as a tactical engagement became something much larger.

"Originally, we brought FocusCFO on board to do tactical things, and it turned into a strategic relationship. We now make decisions with more confidence and have a lot of foresight into what we're doing."
